The "Backups" Program -  A Mentorship program

Welcome to the Goalies Matter Mentorship Program

We’re thrilled to have you join us! As part of "The Backups Program", you're stepping into a community built on connection, support, and growth. Our mission goes beyond enhancing your knowledge of goaltending—we’re here to help you achieve your athletic and personal goals while prioritizing your mental health and overall well-being.

This program is designed to provide meaningful guidance, encouragement, and insight from experienced peers who truly understand the challenges you face both on and off the field. Together, we'll work to strengthen your skills, build resilience, and help you silence the mental health struggles that too many athletes face in silence.

You're not alone in this journey—we’re in it together. Welcome to the team!

OVERVIEW

The "Backups" Mentorship Program

The "Backups" program is a mentorship initiative centered on an informal yet impactful relationship between two individuals: a veteran peer mentor, referred to as "The Backup", and a younger student, known as "The Starter." Mentorship is a key driver of team development and plays a critical role in supporting and improving mental health.

These mentoring relationships are structured to yield meaningful developmental outcomes through active participation, leadership engagement, thoughtful planning, realistic expectations, and clearly defined goals. The program is grounded in the belief that consistent peer support can foster both personal and athletic growth in a safe and encouraging environment.

The primary goal of the Goalies Matter Mentorship Program is to cultivate a culture of leadership development while promoting mental wellness throughout each athlete’s lacrosse journey. The program is dedicated to helping goalies become not only stronger athletes but also exceptional individuals and future leaders.

It recognizes the unique strengths and talents of each goalie and seeks to harness those attributes to help them reach their personal and athletic objectives. This mission is achieved through the creation of an inclusive, empowering environment that celebrates individual accomplishments and advances the broader mission of Goalies Matter—to develop lifelong leaders.
